But however disregarded by town planners, the bicycle still just wont seem to die, for the past fifteen years many cities the wold over have seen the number of cyclists double several times over and increasingly, the bicycle is looked upon as a solution for health and congestion issues in cities across the world.Cycle Space argues that the recent trend to develop former industrial areas, brown-fields, as walkable areas ideal for pedestrians will fail short of this since they are not built tightly enough to be enjoyable by foot. Instead the scale will be ideal to roam - by bicycle. It suggests changes in infrastructure and architecture to further support this development. Interestingly, it also argues an incremental approach for bicycle infrastructure development where investments are focused on creating a really good biking experience in certain areas, let the bicycle adopters choose these, and take it from there, rather than spreading the efforts thinly all over.Cycle Space was a good read passionately arguing for a future in which the bicycle plays a central role for personal transportation.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.It's an otherwise great work that's worth a readBy BTWestfallThe author writes with a sneering voice for parts of the book, which takes a bit away from the very reasonable agenda the book pushes for healthier cities designed around cycling. It's an otherwise great work that's worth a read.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.Walking is boringBy RogerThis a book with a serious message but one written with humour and an unashamed passion for cycling. Fleming's "bike-centric worldview [is] that walking is tiresome and boring." However, this passion together with his academic roles as an architectural historian and theorist and a design studio teacher provide him with a unique, rich and informed perspective on the way cities are and could be seen by one particular group of commuters, travellers and leisure seekers. In particular, the book through its case studies of cities in Europe, Asia, the US and Australia highlights the ways in which these cities work both legitimately and subversively for and often against cyclists. Finally, the book provides an optimistic scenario of what cities could become if cycling was part of mainstream thinking and planning.However, I have one criticism and that is that the images are not referenced in the text and some buildings referred to in the text are not illustrated but should be. Consequently, I spent time flipping back and forth through the book looking for images I thought I had seen or looking for ones that I thought ought to be there.Notwithstanding this last gripe the book is a must for architects, urban designers, city planners, city engineers and of course cyclists who, like Fleming, put their new bike in their bedroom so they can admire it before going to sleep and upon waking.See all 10 customer reviews...
