Rank: #95159 in eBooksPublished on: 2013-03-26Released on: 2013-03-26Format: Kindle eBook 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Funny, Entertaining, and A Cut AboveBy Lee SauerMeg, the heroine of Down and Out in Beverly Heels is a (sometimes) working actress who starred in a hit TV series a while back and has now lost her home and money trying to ransom her husband who was presumably kidnapped. We and Meg find out near the beginning of the book that her husband was a scam artist and his kidnapping was probably faked (by him). So Meg is reduced to living (and sleeping) out of her Volvo while trying to maintain the illusion that everything is just fine (because once word got out about her real circumstances, she would be unemployable in Hollywood. As a result Meg is simultaneously trying to get herself acting work, maintain her image, and track down her husband (although she isn't sure whether she wants to hug him or bean him with a 2 x 4), as an attractive FBI agent (who knows more than he's telling her and may think that she was in on the fraud) and former business associates of her husband who want their money back (and definitely think that she was in on the fraud) are pursuing her.The book is funny and entertaining and a good mystery and it gives an illuminating look at Hollywood and the realities of being a working actress after the term ingenue no longer applies (something Ms. Scott is well-qualified to describe having been a working actress since her days working on the afternoon soap Dark Shadows in the mid-Sixties and more recently as a guest star on a variety of shows as well as a semi-regular on The Goldbergs among other appearances).However, the book goes a lot deeper than that (which is the reason it received 5 stars from me). From the cover illustration, I'd expected that it treats the issue of homelessness as comedy, but Ms. Scott shows a lot more empathy than I'd expected and delves into the reality of life on the streets for both the "genteel" (particularly elderly) homeless and other homeless (those that probably fit our expectations based on what we see on the streets). One other reviewer called the book a downer and depressing, but I found it anything but. As I said the book is funny and if Meg is currently down on her luck, her determination to keep going and get herself back to a "normal" life and anything but depressing. You're rooting for Meg always (even if there are moments you want to shake her 'till her teeth rattle).One thing I really liked about this book was the specificity of the secondary characters. They are by no means generic and seem so genuine that it makes one wonder if they are portraits of actual people. Two examples really stood out for me. One was Donna, an acquaintance of Meg's who offers to let her stay in her guest room for a few days (under the impression that Meg's house is under repair temporarily). Donna is a collector of film memorabilia including a roomful of dolls (whose eyes she carefully closes every night - very creepy). Another is an aged star of the "golden age" of films who, like Meg, pretends not to be homeless (even though it's clear that neither is fooling each other). Both of these characters are so believable (and in the case of the latter, so heartbreaking), that it helps kick this book into a notch above the "genre" category.Ms. Scott has a sequel to Down and Out in Beverly Heels coming out in February (2015). CanadayI hardly ever read detective type novels but I thought I would give this one a try. I was really surprised to find it to be a very realistic portrayal of what it's like to struggle in Hollywood--even if one has found success there in the past. The novel was packed full of "behind-the-scenes" details that make me suspect that the author has more than a little experience with that side of Hollywood life. The plot was a tricky, but true-to-life combination of someone struggling to deal with a raw deal life has handed her and her discovering and unraveling just what had happened and why. Very believable characters bring the story to a surprising conclusion. I have picked up a "couponing" habit. Local had a free coupon where one could get 2 books for $12. I thought I had a great deal......until I saw the selections. I have never heard of these authors so based on the description given, I picked my two. This first one had it all: humor, suspense and romance.I had a coupon from to buy 2 books for $12 but it was limited to a selection of books. I thought about all the genres I liked and it influenced me to select this book because the title showed some humor and the story description was suspenseful.The book opens with our protagonist, Meg Barnes, coming home from her trip in North Carolina, expecting her real estate husband to be home from Mexico already but "greeted with newspapers yellowing on the front door." Then she gets a telephone call. What ensues next Real bad press, some self loathing then starting again. We get to see Meg work a guest role on a pilot while reminescing about being Jinx. We get to meet Donna who still let Meg stay with her even after being roughed up and locked in a closet: "Maybe not, but life's a heck of a lot more interesting with you around."Oh, the twist! I can't give it away.A mix of Erma Bombeck and Ellery Queen is how I would describe this author and if readers like humor and mystery then it is a must read.Scott, Kathryn Leigh. 2013.
