It allows us to be "consistent" without requiring us to go deeper in understanding motivation and behavior of our children or employees. It allows us to believe that we have used effective "discipline" - again without having to engage in uncomfortable or difficult conversations.Bottom line: Kohn makes a great case against "do this and you will get that." But the alternative is not as simple, and that is probably why we fall back to "do this..." so readily.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful.Ok, but now whatBy LauraI read this book based on a recommendation. Overall, I tend to agree with the premise, but there don't seem to be many solutions offered for younger children. We have a nearly two year old and the author claims that a non-reward system can be effectively used, but gives no examples. Reason doesn't work at 2 or 3, but you have to set boundaries somehow. There's some feel good stuff about showing respect, with which I don't disagree, but the problem I have with it is this: A book that argues so fervently the negative aspects of a reward-based society and even goes so far as to state many don't question it because it's so pervasive has to give concrete replacement examples. If our parents and all our parent friends and all the authors teach us to raise our children with rewards, vague statements about listening and showing respect to children isn't going to help with day-to-day issues. And because we don't have anything to replace those actions, we're going to end up right back where we were before we read the book, only feeling more guilty for resorting to 'bribes' to get anything accomplished until they're old enough to reason. However, if you're reading this book from the perspective of interacting with older children or adults, then it can definitely offer some ideas.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Punished by RewardsBy D. MarentetteI first read this book shortly after it was published, and it was the trigger for me to change the direction of my career! I had been a consultant in the arena of compensation programs for 10 years and was frustrated with the results - people paid my firm big bucks to put together pay programs that did NOT get them what they wanted, and I was a part of that. Kohn's book immediately made sense to me and I left that firm shortly thereafter.I am no scientist, but I certainly trust "good" science and find it triggers my thinking about what we can do differently. We are closer today than we were when Kohn first published his book to finding alternative methods of paying people that allow real high performing organizations to exist. It will be difficult for many organizations to change, but those who do will excel in the marketplace, I believe. I am in for the ride, thanks to Alfie Kohn.
