LevineThis is a fascinating study of the European Modernist literary movement (JJoyce, VWolfe,...) as reflected in the literature of the three languages named in the title, the languages of low-country Scotland (related to English rather than to Gaelic), Brittany (NW France), and Occitania (the Southern third of France from Bordeaux to Nice plus a snippet of Spain and Italy). The author is a highly regarded medievalist and professor of French first at Stanford Univ. and presently at the Univ of FL.This study traces the parallel processes of literary development and the national (or ethnic) self-definition of the peoples who speak these three neglected languages. The reader needs no prior familiarity with the language, literature or history of these areas, and will gain an insight into a side of Western Europe he did not even suspect existed. The three areas are not treated in isolation, but put in parallel to each other, and presented against the background of literary innovations in the major lggs of W Europe (esp. English and French). Highly recommended to anyone who has an interest in literature and/or ethnicity and/or nineteenth-twentieth century history.See all 1 customer reviews...
