TaylorIn this book the author looks at the changing view and treatment of black women in the context of the changing view of blacks in American society. At the beginning of the 20th century Black Americans were struggling to regain many of the gains that had been lost in the decades after Reconstruction. This was especially true for an emerging and growing black middle class. Part of this movement for respectability was the establishment of a traditional family structure. This traditional family structure especially in the Victorian Age put certain restrictions and expectations on womens behaviour. This became a double bind for black women as they were being pressured to live up to these expectations while at the same time struggling against the stereotyped image of being sexualized exotic, and primitive the way much of the entertainment of the period potrayed them. This would prove to be a very fine line to walk especially when done in a time when the restrictions of Jim Crow put ppressures on the traditional black family that their white counter parts did not have to face.This book does a very good job of emamining a contemporary sources from personal letters, emerging black cinema, and the lives of well know black female entertainers and entrepreneurs. The ways these people dealt with the pressure of confoming to the traditional feminine image while at the same time trying to achieve their own aspirations all under the deadening weight of racism and racial/gender stereotypes is both intresting and touching. While this is definitly an academic book and not really written for popular audiences it still give a intrestng and sympathetice take on gender/race issues at the turn of the 20th century.See all 2 customer reviews...
