Jackson KingThis novel is a fine space adventure focused on the resistance struggle against Aliens who, 50 years earlier, attacked Earth, destroyed all opponents and now lives on Earth in starships landed as cities. The story is told through two POV characters, Donovan of the Resistance and Gabriel from the New Earth Alliance space force, who are the last survivors of the single starship that escaped humanity's destruction. This is an easy read, written in smoothly flowing prose that immediately engages the reader. The action is nearly non-stop and there are no slow spots or data dumps. As a longtime reader of science fiction, the writing style reminded me of Robert Heinlein while the storytelling mode has echoes of Arthur C. Clarke. While I quite enjoyed this tale that begins a series, I did find a few weak issues that kept me from giving it five stars. There are some FTL physics issues that are not plausible to me, while the last quarter of the book has a few dozen typos that were slightly bothersome. Also, there are some evolutionary biology issues related to the Dread mixing their genome with the human genome. However, the strong points include fascinating Aliens, called the Dread, whose society is explored in the course of the novel. I quite enjoyed this picture of Aliens who destroy humanity who are -not- evil, just trying to survive their own eco-destruction of their home world. The social context of the Dread society is nicely done and different from most Alien cultures I have read. Other strong points are excellent writing, fast paced scenes and a logical storyline that naturally flows from the opening premises. This book is a fine example of fast paced light military Sci-Fi that has characters you will care about. I found myself reading and thinking, "I really need to go to sleep now", and then telling myself, "oh, just one more chapter". The characters are well developed and you will find yourself caring about what happens to them and about there interactions with others. Not too heavy on the military aspect, but just enough to make it interesting. I have already purchased another series by this author (this was the first book I have read from him) and am looking forward to diving in. An alien invasion in 2280 destroyed almost all military on Earth and most of Earth's population. Only one ship got away with colonists. Fifty-two years later, fighting the aliens, nicknamed Dreads, are still impossible as no weapon can penetrate Dread armor, and the colony is considering giving up when Earth communicated they planned to. Just then, a team on Earth managed to stumble upon a secret that can turn the war... an intact usable alien plasma rifle that can penetrate alien armor. Now, the colony founders must mount a mutiny, and steal the Magellan, the original ship that saved them, back to Earth, and attempt to retrieve the alien rifle, no matter how many casualties it takes...The author did a good job making the fight against the aliens ALMOST hopeless, but not quite. The twist about the clones are well, interesting and sets up potential angst later. For one of the alien clones seems to be based upon wife of the Colony leader. Makes you wonder, what happened to the original There are enough twists and turns to make you doubt what will happen next, and the ending was somewhat of a cliff hanger.
