It is so unlike all of his other stories, which rely on 'Happy Ending's. He has a specific format he tended to write with usually going "Poor person, goes through hard times, learns lessons/teaches lessons, rough problems with everyone they meet, comes out on top in the end over everyone."This is not that story. If you look into the background of what Mr. Dickens was going through at the time, a lot of AToTC is very autobiographical. While married to his own wife and having many issues in their marriage, he came upon an actress named Lucy and fell very much in love with her. It is shown very clearly in his writing - Charles Darnay, handsome, wealthy, loved by everyone and who gets the girl, is what Dickens very much wanted to be. Sydney Carton, handsomeish but in an odd manner, drunkard, full of wasted potential and much older than his love interest, is who Dickens felt he was.I urge anyone who may have been turned off by Dickens before to give A Tale of Two Cities a try. Yes, it is long and very wordy (written in a time when authors were paid by the word), but there is an amazing gem of a story to be found within.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.It was the best of times.By Hawk“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”, those days in which your English Literature professor ordered you to read “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens. You were immediately confounded by the perplexity of the story and confused by the language of the times. In your despair, you struggled, endeavored and persevered to reach the conclusion of the classic novel. Having satisfactorily completed the requirements of that difficult semester, you vowed to never again read classic English literature. As the years accumulated, you garnered wisdom and spirituality as you aged and you gathered far greater literary acumen. Your mind was transformed and you began to yearn for the great stories that could only be told by the true masters. Anon, you found yourself immersed in the incredible classic writings of Charles Dickens. For no one could so completely transport you to the mean filthy streets of Oliver Twist’s London or the horror and dread of The Reign of Terror in that unfortunate tale of London and Paris in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety-three. No other writer could place you so deeply into the mind of a tyrannical boss such as Ebenezer Scrooge or imbue the viciousness of a violent revolutionary the likes of Madame Defarge. Contemporary writers only wish they had the amazing ability to create magnificent unlikely heroes and fantastic characters whose flame of eternal hope burned against an all consuming darkness.What I am trying to convey to you, the young reader, is for you to lose that hangdog demeanor and engage yourself in the world of Dickens for “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done.”(I apologize for my Dickensian review of a Dickens novel; I hope it made you smile.)0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. SAW IT ON DVD READ THE BOOK PLEASE READ THE BOOK By deedeepIn Today's Fast Paced World, We Like to Take Shortcuts. Please Don't Take a Shortcut. Read the Book. The Movie Does Not Do Justice to the Storyline. The Only Way to Impart the Feelings of This Book, is to Read This Book. If Charles Dickens Were a Playwright, I'm Sure He Would have Written Some Magnificent Plays, But His Works Were Meant to be Read Not Visualized on the Screen. A Great Deal is Lost. It Likens Me Back to When I Saw The Exorcist. Everyone Said how Horrifying the Movie Was and How it Would Change Your Entire Belief System. I Went and Saw it and Nothing. I Didn't Even Think it Was That Good of a Movie, not Even One I'd Want to Watch Twice. A Few Years Later, at a Friends Urging I Read the Book. A Damned Good Book. Goose Bumps Ran Up Me. The Book Was Completely Different From the Movie. The Book Made Sense. The Movie Was Hollywood. Lesson Learned. Always Read the Book First. This is a Long Book, But Because it is So Gripping, it Does Hold Your Attention For Long Periods of Time. You'll Find Yourself Not Wanting To Put It Down. The Characters and Lives are All Intertwined and it Adds a Depth and Richness to the Book. This is a Historical Fiction that Spans nearly 20 Years From the Time Preceding and During the French Revolution.
