The Daily 5 is not a curriculum. It is a literacy framework. A person cannot find all of the information to successfully implement The Daily 5 on Pinterest or Teachers Pay teachers. I would HIGHLY recommend that all teachers who are interested in implementing The Daily 5 read this book. Highlight, tab, underline, and write in the margins, because this book will be your go-to resource. I have been using it for 6 years (in kindergarten and 2nd grade classrooms), and I have always followed the recommended launching schedule. I am very strict when building stamina, and my students thrive on this structure. I have had classrooms with high populations of students with behavior concerns and/or students in special education, and The Daily 5 has truly worked wonders in my classroom. The structure has allowed me to easily differentiated, while meeting with small groups. (I am very very rarely interrupted by students while meeting with a group!) My main reason for purchasing the 2nd edition of this book was to read more about Math Daily 3, which I will be implementing this school year. There is also a lot of updated information on Daily 5.32 of 33 people found the following review helpful.Great new info related to research and experience!By Jonel C. LEVYI'm a kinder teacher with 20+ years of experience who read the first edition and struggled with its application to kinder. I was after all already using the elements - just in another format. With the changes in the second edition I now see better how this will fit in my classroom. Teachers of younger children, don't be afraid to read this. It has great info for little ones.27 of 28 people found the following review helpful.Worth every cent, including the shipping cost! :)By KarenLooking for a way to give your students more independent reading time in a way that holds them accountable, but without putting a whole heap of extra "busy work" marking on your desk. That's what I was doing, and several teachers recommended Daily 5. I waited for the 2nd edition to be released, and in some ways I'm glad I did, but at the same time I am wishing I read this several months ago. I'm now re-reading it, at a slower pace, and thinking about how I can implement it in my classroom next year (with only 8 weeks left this year it's not going to happen this year).Daily 5 is NOT a language arts curriculum or program as such. It is really a way of managing the classroom, by fostering independence. This book is so well written, that I read the whole book, cover to cover, within 3 days of receiving it. It is clear, easy to read, with practical tips, sample lesson plans, lots of photos, and suggestions for different ways to use Daily 5.I think my only reservation about this book is that, throughout the book, there are many references to "CAFE", which is another books that provides more information on the assessment and teaching processes that are usually used concurrently with Daily 5. Sadly, because I really want a hard copy for day to day reference, I'm going to have to wait another month to receive it (I'm in Cambodia). I'd strongly recommend the authors consider producing a single book with information about Daily 5 and CAFE in the one book.To finish on a positive note, the bonus in the 2nd edition is the inclusion of "Math Daily 3", which takes the principles of Daily 5 and applies them to mathematics teaching and learning. Thank you "two sisters".See all 690 customer reviews...
